Grayson County Snipe

The 29th, a good friend "JJ" invited me to come up to Grayson County Texas to hunt Snipe that Thursday
afternoon. He was not sure if he had Woodcock or Snipe, but I was sure it was Snipe due to the location. Had a great time despite the lack of birds. We saw two Snipe and got only one of those. Snipe as we know are notorious for being gone today, here yesterday. I thought that might be the case with the long hard freeze we had just had pushing them on south. Or all the ice/rain spreading them out into area fields. That's why they call it hunting and the best time to go hunting is like fishing, "when you can". I enjoyed the walk, shared war stories, and tour of his new house. Blaze had fun of course. JJ BTW, I am sure was a market hunter in a previous life. He keeps a hunting log and he took 215 ducks this season during 62 hunts.

Just me, the Dog, & a bunch of Snipe

The Day's Snipe Habitat

I drove out to East Texas this day looking for Snipe. More walking than usual, but I was able to shoot some birds. Searched for Woodcock in the woods, but those eluded me. Woodcock season was to end the next day, so for Woodcock, its a bust again this year. That's ok. It is the year of the Snipe! This season I have hunted them in two counties of Colorado, two counties of Oklahoma, and 4 counties in Texas. Proving to be a good year. With all this hunting, I really don't care that my lease has no Quail this year.

Amazing in that Duck season had been over for less than a week. They
know its over already! How do they know! Just amazing.

Blaze pointed hard on a patch of thick marsh grass. I whoa'd her,
walked around her, and stomped in it to see what she was pointing.
Nothing came out. Pretty clear to me she was pointing a swamp rat.
Being a fur and feather dog, she does that sometimes. I sent her on.
But she kept going right back to that spot and pointing. I started to
just walk off and leave her, then what do you know, a Rail flew
straight up out from her point. Out of season, so did not shoot it,
but thought that was neat.

The posing Dog. I did not put her this way. I was placing the birds
for a picture and she just jumped up there and stood like that.

Da Limit!

Sat and ate a sandwich here. The reflecting pool. It was a nice spot
to take a break.
