Livin' on Teal Time

September 16, 2010

Well you know I've been through it, when I set my watch back to it, livin' on Teal time.

I got out in the Kayak this morning for my first Teal hunt of the season. Long drive, long portage, long paddle, but it was worth it. Blaze was happy.

This is a hero picture I took as a reminiscence to put in my dogs hunting diary. But what I wanted to show here is the decoys. Something I have wanted to try. I took some old worn out Flambeaus that I started hunting with in the late 70s, and painted the shoulders with a large Teal Blue patch. Not natural for resting birds, but I wanted to try it for the visual effect. Teal are gullable anyway. Not in the picture, I also had another separate spread of an equal amount of small Teal decoys, so it was somewhat of an experiment.

At two minutes before legal I had a small flock of Shovelers land. Well duh, the wing patches made the decoys look like drake Shovelers. Blaze could not see over the brush and when I looked over at her, she was upright bouncing on her hind legs like a circus poodle trying to see. She kept it up for probably 20 seconds. My laughing of course ran off the Shovelers.

Result following when it started raining flocks of Teal. I would give a wild guess that 75% of the birds were drawn to my painted Flambeaus over the Teal decoys. I paddled out in my Kayak to take a look and those suckers with the blue patches really stand out from a distance.

Bonus Dove are always nice.

Kayak rigging. Texas rigged teal decoys and camo lawn chair are under the back deck. Dry box in front of that. Blaze sitting on a boat cushion next. My seat with the gell pad for comfort, gun at ready, life vest in reach, bag of big decoys. Under front deck, drinks, spare single blade paddle, dove decoys, mojo dove, mojo stake.

Huntin' on the Rail road

Sept 16 continued

After the Teal hunt, I stopped off at another area to look around, do some scouting, and maybe hunt some Rail. I ran into a couple Corps Rangers out making rounds. They also hunt. Really nice guys and a positive experience. Never asked for my permit. I introduced myself, but they already knew who I was or at least knew who Blaze was. Report was promising on me finding Rails today. And I did. Or maybe I should say Blaze did.

I think the picture above is my best of the season so far. Every time I look at the stupid smile on my dog I can't help but think of Muttley from Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines trying to Stop the Pigeon. I just wish she would stop asking me for a Medal! HHHHHEEEEEEE HHHHHEEEEEEE HHHHHEEEEEEEE!

Extremely difficult stuff to hunt. Birds in thick tall cover, probably due to the heat. Clouds of pollen with every step and every hop of the dog. Birds flying like Grasshoppers and they would not travel much farther than a Grasshopper. If I did not get a shot off fast, they were down and buried, never to fly again.

Blaze may have had fun finding them, but she sure did not like retrieving them. Probably due to being covered in pollen.

The heat was unbearable. I only managed three before I had enough. All a little ratty from being in my pocket. All have a mask, thus all Soras. Sorry, AAR, no Virginia's seen.

Another Mixed Bag Hunt

September 17, 2010

I set up in a different place today than yesterday. Teal did come. First a pair, then a small flock, then a huge flock that covered me up. After a single from the early pair, I had a real hard time picking birds so I would not drop too many. 4 shots, 4 kills today.

This single kept flying in and landing by me while I was pulling and chunking decoys over to load up in the kayak. Someone somewhere will kill this bird before the weekend is over. It has a death wish.

Then a short try on the morning Dove flight using a mojo and a half dozen dove decoys.

2 more shots, 2 more kills.

Then I finished the morning walking up Rails. This one tried to fly across the lake. It did not make it. I discovered something though. They do swim under water. It popped under just as Blaze got to it the first time. It was lost for a while, but I got a head shot on it eventually. I also found out they run through the weeds like field rats. Blaze and I chased a cripple all over the place. It slipped right through my fingers and eventually buried up someplace and got away.

Finished up with 5 more birds and was on the road home before noon just as it was getting to hot to be out. A good day, though when I got home, I don't think my wife appreciated the residue from my Dog's mud bath.
