East Texas Duck Hunting

1/16/11

Did some Duck hunting in East Texa with Guy Ferreira and his dog Molly. Wet rainy weather.

Day 1 in layout blinds. Blaze was with me in my blanket layout blind.

Guy demonstrating the "Decoy" command.

Day two I hunted from my "Duck Punt" or decked Pirogue for the first time since restoring it. Unfortunately it rained real water instead of greenhead Mallards, but it was a fun hunt for it's maiden voyage.

I'm a Snipe-a-holic

2/07/11

I had to get a fix today. But first... Dang slob hunters. This is sad. Every year when I do my post season scouting and Snipe hunting I run across this stuff.

Blaze likes it though. A place to sit out of the mud.

On the way back from where I took those pictures I had an interesting encounter. I was not seriously hunting at the time, but I did carry a shotgun with me on the walkabout. As I passed through the woods, Miss Blaze goes on this hard point. I figured it was a rabbit and slowly moved in. Out of the bushes comes this big old Wild Hog straight towards me, but I don't think it knew I was in it's path. My gun never made it to my shoulder before my shot. Unfortunately my shot though maybe only 15 feet away, was over the Hog's bow. Fortunately the miss caused the Hog to swing around me.

So back to my Snipe hunting fix.

First Snipe. Really surprised me as it was the first one I saw in over an hour of walking. I was about to give up and go home.

This Otter was upset with Blaze swimming in his/her water; followed Blaze back in and barked at us for a few minutes before side swimming away.

Snipe #2. Then it was time to put the camera up and get down to business.

Took me a couple more hours of walking, but with Blaze's help did eventually take 8 birds. Shots were difficult. Still I averaged around two shots per bird. I have not shot much lately so I was surprised I did so well.

These guys seemed to know they are safe from human harm now that duck season is over.

That was my morning. It was refreshing. I was hoping to get back out Wednesday to another location. And the next location would not have required so much walking and work either, but as Charlie Brown said to Lucy..... "AAUGH!" 30s, 20+ mph winds, 90% chance Sleet, Wind Chill in the Teens. Mother Nature has pulled the football out from under me.
