The last Snipe Hunt 2/17/2008

Today was the last day of Snipe Season. Despite the wind and yesterdays flooding, I made the most of it. My best spot was under water, but I did jump one Snipe there. In the picture below the jumped Snipe passed right to left between the two dead trees in the water. With all the Pintails I was unable to take the shot.

On a hunch I headed to a flooded cut field. Found Birds here, easy walking, and they were holding good for me. I was in Snipe hunters heaven for a little while. Once all the birds had been flushed from the field, they unfortunately did not return.

Another thing about that field. Once the Snipe had all been pushed out, Blaze started rooting giant Crawfish out of the grass that had been left exposed as the water level dropped. I bagged about a pound of them. Blaze would run ahead, stop and stick her nose in the grass, sometimes getting pinched and having to shake it off. I would bag each crawdad at the same time sending her on for the next one. She was finding them as fast as I could bag them. It was fun. I was laughing out loud. I must have looked crazy to anyone in the distance.

Then I stumbled onto a couple more birds on the way back to my truck. Not the usual Snipe habitat. It was more like hunting quail. I suspect it was some of the birds we flushed off the field earlier.

Hit another spot and picked up only one more bird after a whole lot of walking. To my surprise, I did come apon a Muzzleloader wielding Hog hunter. I had to inform him it was not legal for the place and time per that particular area's hunting regulations.

Though I only had 5 Snipe up to this point, I decided to call it a day. I did do a quick walk-a-bout to take a few pictures of the Waterfowl. I would say 95% of the Ducks in the area where Pintails and there were hundreds of them. Here are some gratuitous Pintail pictures.

And of course the ever present Coots. Amazes me how well they can fly when they want to.

There were a few of these Odd looking Ibis birds hanging around. I have seen these while Duck hunting before, but not very often.

With Snipe season over, I have just about run out of Birds to hunt, but it
ain't over yet! Check out page 5 for an Oklahoma Crow hunt.
