November 15, 2008 - Western Oklahoma Goose Hunt

Saturday morning as we put out decoys in the dark, there were already Geese in the air. The wind seemed to get them moving and had them flying back and forth from fields to water all morning.

Between Geese landing in decoys and fly-bys we did ok, much better than the average hunter at this location. To see so many Geese travel back and forth over us in great waves was spectacular.

As before were checked by US Fish and Wildlife while leaving the hunting area.

After the morning Goose hunt we hit the road back to jump ducks then look for Resident Geese again to finish the limit with the last bird. At the same location Mark picked up his Merganser the day before, I dropped one. Cost us Mallards though. The Mallards where right below us and I never saw them until after I shot.

I was not paying attention and talking to Roadgoeson20, then noticed Blaze had this merganser in her mouth. She just wanted to carry it I guess. It was not anything I told her to do. She carried it all the way to the truck and it was a long walk.

We did find the Resident Geese on our lake again. Across a great cove. As well as a small group of Buffleheads that included three drakes. The Geese were beached and we hoped to make a stalk. We brought along some Bluebill decoys for an evening duck hunt after. Hoping to decoy the Buffleheads. The hike was much farther than we expected but we got there. Yep, just in time for the Geese to leave. We later learned the Geese ended up on the beach in front of our Camp!

We stayed at the Goose spot hoping they would return. Also put out the duck decoys for a dual target hunt. Mark saw some of the Buffies swim around a point, so I left to make a stalk on them. Waited for the right moment when they were all under water, jumped up to get in position. I picked the best looking drake to shoot when they popped back up and attempt to escape.

I do believe I will have that Bufflehead mounted!!! Beautiful little puffball of a duck. A small group of Huge Geese did come back. They were very low, but Mark and I were about 150 yards apart and the Geese directly between us. No shots fired.

Bird Cleaning time.

Mark brought along Steak and Eggs for our Victory Meal. I cooked our Merganser Breasts by glazing them with a Terriyaki Paste, and Spicy Montreal Steak seasoning. Actually pretty good and we feel we have dispelled the myth that these are not good to eat. Any one who goes on this hunt with me in the future, must kill and eat a Merganser or they can not return.
