Long Haired Dave's Great Snipe Adventure

Dave I know from his fishing. He is a flyfishing instructor and specializes in flyfishing for Carp, of which he also guides for. An expert sight fisherman. Dave had posted on a local hunting forum his frustration from three or four duck hunts during the week before. He took no ducks on these hunts. I decided to throw my morning plan of hunting Oklahoma out the window and give Dave a call. First suggestion was to change scenery and get away from that lake or at least the area he was hunting. After discussing a few different hunting options we came up with a mission; I had Dave meet up at my house late this morning for a drive to a different lake to scout for ducks and then hopefully find some Snipe to shoot at. So, off we went.
Mission accomplished. We found one little oasis in the middle of the dead sea that Dave was to hunt the next morning. Unfortunately I would have to work and unable to make the duck hunt.

Mission Two accomplished also. We found Snipe. Dave's first Snipe ever! In this picture Blaze is almost saying with that expression on her face "Well it might only be your first one but it's my 10,000th, lets get a move on!"

Snipe were spread out, so they usually surprised us. Most flying out low and fast. This was modified choke day for sure. Dave got his two, I ended up with five. Dave made one great shot on a high flyer that looked impressive from my vantage point.

Good Times!

Last Duck Hunt of the Season

January 24, 2009

Headed up to Lake tex-X-oma for my last duck hunt of the season. Being solo this
morning, initially I just enjoyed the birds working and did not take any shots.
Perhaps should have because when I did start shooting all that was flying were
Greenwings. But that's fine, I am happy with Teal. I was kayaking in Airboat
country and stayed mobile with very few decoys, I did move a couple times to try
different things. Yes an Airboat did drive through my decoys. But in his
defense, to get where he was going he had no choice. I did make one near attempt
to intercept some Snow Geese. And some other general exploring in the yak as well.

You would think this tree would make a great vantage point to drop a couple
decoys and hunt, but it was not meant to happen. If I had taken one more step, I
would still be there stuck in the Red River Quick Mud.
Almost made it - Sigh... Oh, and notice the Snow Geese feathers on the mud.

"Not Me" says Blaze. I want no part of it!

Caught Blaze napping in this picture, but she is trying to stay awake. I wanted
an Oklahoma Pintail to go with my Teal, so I held out and set up in a special
spot just for a Pintail before I paddled back in.

Long wait, but I did get my Pintail! My Teal ducks had rolled around for awhile
in the mud soup on the floor of my kayak, so not worthy for the picture, but I
think a Pintail Drake deserves a picture of it's own anyway.

Overall a good ending to Duck season for us. Just enough wind to make the decoys
look like live ducks. Other hunters far away. Not too cold, not too warm. And of
course, got to shoot some birds.
